4) SOCIAL MEDIA

Social media include Facebook, Blogspot, Twitter, Tumblr, and Youtube. (Entertainment/social feeds)
As such, the group has focused on different influential people who'd made use of mass communication (by feeding these sites) with relevant information, with purposes that live up to the 3 functions of Mass Communication, such as: Persuading, Informing, Entertaining, Responsibility to Public, and Connecting the Community.

Here goes:

LTA is a government-based board, and that it has set up an official twitter account to disseminate information (living up to informing-function of mass comm).  It serves to inform people about the accidents that have occurred all around Singapore so that drivers take more precautions and plan their route to their destination.

An official Facebook account posting an information about an influential leader's birthday.

Singapore's very own Mediacorp channel's official twitter account. This serves to inform viewers about their recent updates.

An official Manchester United twitter account. Aims to "persuade" public for more support, and inform current fans about their updates.

An official government-based twitter account to inform members of public about the current PSI rates, and information about haze (dangers, and precautions)

An official FIFA twitter account to tell the world about the updates of FIFA -- The scoring of all matches, the updates of all the players involved. (Cater to inform fans of FIFA)
An official account of a public figure (influential person, our PM). This account serves as a platform between citizens and the PM himself. This account also serves to inform citizens about the country's updates -- Economy status, HDB building, future plans, etc.

CNA's account serves as a platform for the public to get the most recent updates/news (also to check what they have missed) As CNA's vision, itself, it aims to inform/entertain the members of public.

Official web page of Israel Defense Forces. It aims to "persuade" people to support them for their actions (As stated on the webpage itself), as well as inform public about their recent plans (Who are they attacking, How they attacked, etc.)
BBC's official facebook account, just like CNA's, updates people about current/recent affairs. (Inform)

In conclusion, having used all these platforms (of social media), these functions of Mass Communication are relevant to a large extent now.

3. ARTICLE

-Newspaper articles/magazines

This article by Payal Kamat is one of the artefacts we chose as a team as the writer tries to inform the public about what Mass Communications is and how essential it is in our daily lives. This article aims to let the public know that about how mass communication has influenced our daily lives by pointing out facts that supports his claim such as us being dependent on media for entertainment and a source for information.

2. WEBSITES

The reason why we chose an educational website as an artefact for one of our modes for Mass Communications is because this University in Minnesota is trying to promote it’s course through an official education website which establishes it’s credibility of an official University based in Minnesota.

The website has modes of mass communication which tries to persuade people from around the world to come as it has videos and pictures to illustrate and inform the public as to what is has to offer.

1) PICTURES

The members of public listening to information being disseminated by audio; Crystal Radio.
This picture depicts members of public listening to information, disseminated via Crystal Radio, back then. As we can see, they look elated with the piece of news they have just received. To link this back to the driving question (since audio is a platform of Mass Communication); Yes, the function (of entertaining, persuading and informing) is relevant to a large extent.

Dr Martin Luther King Jr addresses the crowd at the March on Washington in 1963, as he delivers his famous speech, "I have a dream."
This picture depicts a leader addressing the mass. This lives up to (a large extent) of Mass Communication's most vital function (Persuading/Informing/Entertaining), having said that he was delivering his famous speech.

Hitler showing his appreciation to his (mass) supporters (so as to gain more support),1939

A speech by candidate Hitler to a large crowd (mass) in Berlin's Lustgarted in April 1932.
This picture shows Hitler attending an "interview" with cameras/audio recorders before him. As such, he is trying to gain supporters by one of Mass Communication's medium, which is via television. The purpose of utilizing this medium is to gain support and hence an act of persuasion (living up Mass Communication's function).

President Obama waves to the crowd as he delivers his speech at the memorial service for Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg, 2013.
This picture shows an influential leader talking to the mass, and delivering a speech in memorial of the late (so as to inform people of his death), as it is a responsibility to the public. To relate this back to the driving question, it proves that these functions (of persuade, inform, entertain, and responsibility to the public) are still relevant now, and to a large extent.
(Retrieved 050814: http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/12/10/article-2521146-1A011CBE00000578-267_964x571.jpg)

In 2008, Obama made a public speech, to gain support of the people to vote for him in his presidency voting.  As such, he had lived up to mass communication's function (to persuade, entertain, inform, as well as connecting the community to come together and together support his 5-year plans.)

I have picked these political leaders as part of my research to not only prove the relevance of mass communication's functions, but to make a distinct comparison between the use of mass communication back then, and as of the current era.
This has led us to conclude that:
Yes, thee functions of mass communication are relevant to a large extent, (even) now.
